What are your design tips
for a stunning fireplace mantel?
I need help with my mantel
this Christmas!

When putting together your holiday mantel always start with your greenery. I LOVE fresh greenery whenever it can be used – cedar, spruce, pine, eucalyptus – it will look great and make your home smell amazing (remember to mist it regularly to keep it from drying out quicker). If you use your fireplace regularly a faux option might be your best bet. Adding warm twinkle lights to the greenery gives off a nice festive glow.

Next, I would add a large-scale art print or mirror - I love a good size mirror and it will reflect the lights and any candles glowing from around the room.

If your mantel is thick enough layer the large-scale piece with another smaller art piece. Add some pillar candles or candlesticks to create balance and height.

Keep the rest simple, you don’t need all the extra tchotchkes! I’ll admit I have used fake pillar candles that turn on by remote control – a convenient and safer option (especially if you use fresh greenery).

Lastly, you could add some stockings that match your décor for that extra festive touch.

As fellow designers we appreciate his enthusiasm for the entire process of a project. He has a great ability to plan ahead, detailing everything out from the beginning – even on the smallest of details – which honestly has a phenomenal impact on his final product in the end.

OUTSIDE CHRISTMAS DECOR

This is a great year to do a little extra with your outside decorating! We all need a little more festive cheer to admire this year. Here are a few tips of how I like to decorate my own exterior for Christmas:

FRESH GREENS

Getting outside in your own yard is a great place to start when gathering your clipping for fresh greenery and branches, and if you don’t have any, check out your local tree farm or Lowe’s where they’ve cut off and trim the bottoms of the Christmas trees and they give away the loose branches.

I’m obsessed with greenery outside – simple and easy fresh cedar boughs everywhere! You can make garland with cedar branches, blue spruce, or fir clippings – whatever you have access to. I like cedar the most because it droops so nicely.

WREATHS

A wreath on the door is a must – definitely go big! A fresh wreath will give off a great scent as your company comes to your front door. Magnolia leaf wreaths are often a fave!

PLANTERS

I like to fill my large planters outside with branches and sticks. I’ll use cedar greens stuffed in as a base (more is better) and then take sticks or fir branches and poke them in the centre to spike out the top. This year I used juniper clippings and cedar as my base filler.

A favorite stick I love to use are dogwood willows, the branches are red and add a festive color pop. Throw some pinecones and twist in some lights and they will look beautiful!

LIGHTS, LIGHTS & MORE LIGHTS

Of course, white lights are a fave – a warm white light (not the LED blue/cool white) feels more welcoming and cozier. A house trimmed in warm white lights is perfect!

If you know me, I’m not really a fan of color, but if you must add some, I suggest going with one color like all red or all green on some bushes or trees in the yard.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
FROM SU CASA

It’s that time of year when we get together at Su Casa and take a recap of how the year went…well 2020 will be memorable in so many ways. Early in the pandemic we had to shut our doors at the office for a time, but thankfully we were able to work semi-cohesively from home and still provide great design work to our current clients.

It also gave us an opportunity to be creative in different ways, for starters – we rebranded our company! I bought and moved into a new home (the creative juices are flowing for this next reno!). We have expanded our office and hired more staff (DURING a pandemic – phew!). We also developed more stock plans this year than we’ve done in previous years. Su Casa added more online sales and began to explore different ways to stay connected to our clients by providing affordable online design services.

Aside from the past year, we now get to look forward to my most favorite time of the year – CHRISTMAS. Not only is it a chance for me to switch up my décor and add extra lights and twinkle to relish in the season but I get to celebrate the best gift of all – Jesus! God sent his only son as a baby to save the world from our sin – for this I am eternally grateful.
